Pampers Golden Sleep
Survey
A new study* released today reveals Australian babies are among the most sleep deprived in the western world, with nearly half of Australian babies aged between 12-24 months surviving on
less than eight hours of sleep per night (compared to a
third of babies in Western Europe). This is four hours less
than the 12 hours of sleep recommended by child and family
health professionals for optimum growth and development.
The Pampers Nappies Golden Sleep Survey* conducted in
conjunction with Tresillian Family Care Centres, looks at
the extent of Australia’s infant sleep deficit and its
impact on baby development.
Conducted among 1,000 Australian mums, the survey found mums
were unanimous in their belief that sleep is vital for
baby’s happiness and ongoing development. The survey reveals
infants who have eight or more hours of uninterrupted
‘golden’ sleep each night are significantly more sociable
and eager to play, compared to infants who sleep for five or
less hours per night, proving sleep is the key to emotional,
physical and cognitive development in infants.
According to Professor Cathrine Fowler, Tresillian Chair in
Child and Family Health, “Parents know the value of sleep.
In fact the survey demonstrated 92% of mums believe sleep is
one of the most important things their baby needs to grow
and develop, and that their infant is likely to be more
responsive throughout the day after a good period of
uninterrupted sleep. However, achieving uninterrupted sleep
is not always easy.”
“From my experience, infants who benefit from uninterrupted
‘golden’ sleep embrace each day with a better temperament
and mood, setting the tone for a much happier day for
everyone” adds Professor Fowler.
Versus a study** of over 50,000 mums in Western Europe
conducted by Pampers, Australian babies are found to be
significantly more sleep deprived. In Western Europe, nearly
75% of infants aged 12-24 months sleep for eight or more
hours per night, compared to only 44% of infants in the same
age bracket in Australia.
Pampers Golden Sleep Survey -
Findings
One of the key factors that
contribute to an infant’s quality of sleep is their baby’s nappy. While it is
not surprising that a wet leaking nappy is one of the most common reasons for
sleep disturbances in infants, the survey found nearly 50% of mums believe a
thick, bulky nappy has a negative impact on their infant’s comfort and sleep
levels.
A good nappy can play a major role in promoting uninterrupted sleep among
infants. Parents should look for a nappy that is thin and offers excellent
absorbency to keep baby dry for up to 12 hours and help to alleviate sleep
disturbances. Pampers with Dry Max features new innovative technology featuring
high powered absorbent gels, which make the nappy thinner yet very absorbent to
lock away wetness. Keeping your infant dry at night will go a long way to
helping your baby sleep uninterrupted, which in turn promotes an infant’s
learning and development.
In Addition, the Pampers Golden Sleep Survey found parents most often lack sleep
because their baby is not sleeping. Not surprisingly, three quarters of
Australian mums said having an uninterrupted ‘golden’ night of sleep would be
priceless!
The key findings were:
• Ninety percent (90%) of Australian mums believe their child is happier after a
good night sleep
• Seventy-five percent (75%) of babies who slept for eight or more hours a night
are described by their parents as more sociable and more willing to play
compared to fifty-three (53%) of babies who sleep for five or less hours at
night
• Almost every mum (95%) said they see a direct connection between their baby
having a good night sleep and their own mood the next morning
• Despite nearly half (46%) of Australian babies receiving less than eight hours
sleep, three quarters (75%) of Australian mums believe their baby is a good
sleeper
• Seventy-five percent (75%) of mums said lack of sleep was one of the greatest
challenges of parenthood, however this increased to 83% of mums whose baby has
less than five hours of sleep per night
• Half (52%) of mums said establishing a sleep routine was one of the greatest
challenges of
parenthood
To assist mums with getting baby
into a good sleep routine, Pampers has launched the Pampers Golden Sleep Program
in conjunction with Tresillian Family Care Centres to address the issues around
baby’s sleep. The 12 point program contains practical strategies to help mums
find the best way for them to help get their baby into a healthy sleeping
pattern. The program is supported by the Pampers Golden Sleep video which can be
downloaded from the Pampers and Tresillian websites.

Leah Walker - I was pleasantly
surprised at home well the nappies fit my little one. Not only did she sleep
well, but she didn't leak through (like she normally would any other night). I
liked how the nappies felt and and would certainly buy them again myself. A
great idea with a great program. Thank you!
Michelle Cooper - Right from the
start I felt that these nappies were fitting better than our usual brand. There
was a great night's sleep had by all, and whether this was from the nappy or
just good luck, I don't really care! I would buy them again as I think it really
was a help to keep him dryer than usual.
