Your baby is learning to…
- Take a few steps and begin walking when supported
- Show great interest in other children and babies
- Assist with dressing by pushing arms or legs into clothes
- Hold a fat crayon to draw or a brush to paint
My First Steps
Your baby may be starting to want to walk themselves, but still needs support from an adult to do this. Keep giving your baby opportunities to walk
during the day with your help and they will gradually become more confident. You will start to notice them tentatively taking some steps
all by themselves. To promote this, place a toy that your baby likes a little distance away and encourage you baby walk towards it. They may
decide to crawl instead, but don’t be discouraged as it is all practice.
I Like to Watch Others
Babies at this age become very aware of other children and babies around them. This is a great time to start introducing your baby to other
children. If you do not have friends or relatives with children around your baby’s age, contact your local Mother’s Group or Play Group for
help meeting other families with children the same age. As an alternative, the local park or playground is a great place to meet other
parents with children.
I Can Help Get Dressed
Your baby may be starting to assist you when you are dressing them by pushing their arms or legs into their clothes. Sing songs and talk to your baby
about the type of clothes you are putting on them.
Painting and Drawing
Offer your baby opportunities to paint and draw. Give your baby crayons and paper when sitting in their high chair to develop their fine motor
skills. Now is a great time for you to start looking at painting and drawing activities on the main Our Little Treasure
Diary Page.
