Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)

ANI is a more inflexible type of artificial intelligence, which does not conform or adapt to the requirements of a particular system or machine. Its function is to focus on a unique work and dedicate all its complexity. If we draw a parallel, it would be a trained professional who is dedicated to a single complex function.

The operation of the ANI model is projected through the programming of its actions. At that stage, you should be prepared to act in a single role, reducing your performance as much as possible.

This will also ensure that it can play its full part. As much as that may seem like a limitation, it can also be seen as a broad and comprehensive dedication.

Among its characteristics, ANI is an artificial intelligence with reactive character and limited memory. In addition, by definition, all other models can be considered a type of ANI.

The difference is that, for the most part, the types of artificial intelligence are designed to fulfill more diverse and even multiple functions.

Technical classifications place ANI as an intelligence incapable of reproducing human behavior, only by simulating it. Therefore, it is only targeted.

Typically, ANI is used in functions such as:

  • virtual assistants (Siri, Alexa, Cortana, among others);
  • facial recognition;
  • spam filters in emails;
  • autonomous vehicle systems.

General Artificial Intelligence (AGI)

Among the types of artificial intelligence, AGI is considered strong and deep, as a machine capable of imitating human intelligence and with a vast capacity for action.

In her behavior, she can learn and, based on that, replicate attitudes to solve different issues. That’s what makes it one of the most versatile models available today.

AGI has the role of thinking, which leads to a unique and not completely robotic understanding. So, for each scenario you have to deal with, the proposed solution is different.

This ability to adapt to different scenarios makes it have a resolution activity very close to the human mind. That is precisely why she is considered a much deeper intelligence.

One of the foundations of AGI is its theoretical structure. That means you have the ability to assess and detect different needs, processes and even emotions to act correctly. That’s a unique feature when compared to other types of artificial intelligence.

In practice, their learning capacity and cognitive level are very high. This allows, for example, to shape the service of a company according to the most common doubts and needs of the person of the brand.

It is very common to work with machines that are capable of replicating human actions, which in itself is very beneficial. However, AGI is a system capable of studying and understanding humans and dealing accurately with user interactions and behaviors.

Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)

The name is up to the capacity of that kind of artificial intelligence. ASI is considered the most powerful, precisely because it is the machine capable of becoming conscious and autonomous.

That is, instead of simply replicating human behavior, ASI exceeds that ability. She is even considered capable of thinking better and being more skilled than we are.

Of course, that’s a category of artificial intelligence that’s still in development and improvement, albeit in an advanced state.

This is the model that has inspired cinema to create realities in which robots have their own will and simply dominate the Earth! Of course that won’t happen, but the idea is that they can be smart in the same way they’re portrayed in the movies.

ASI’s development line strives so that those robots can be better than humans at absolutely everything. Machines will be better athletes, scientists, artists and even doctors. There’s really a possibility to think about that because it’s at a scientific level that focuses on creating systems that awaken emotions and desires of their own.

Thus, care is needed in the development of ASI. Advanced reasoning ability requires a meticulous analysis of the possible consequences that this can have. Therefore, the work is continuous, always carried out with responsibility.

Reactive machines

Among the types of artificial intelligence, reactive machines are the simplest and oldest known. It is an introductory model and has a much more limited capacity than the models presented so far. Its function is quite simple: to reproduce human behavior when it is stimulated, that is, only a reactive action.

Because they don’t have memory, those machines don’t have the ability to learn and manage an internal database to execute what they absorb. Thus, they only have a response role, that is, they are automated to react to some action. This limitation, however, does not prevent them from being useful in several texts, although they are gradually becoming obsolete.

Certainly, when we talk about reactive machines, we must remember their great moment, when they were tested in the 1990s. It was a system like that beat chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997. At the time, the specific machine was an IBM creation, called Deep Blue.

Limited Memory

Limited memory machines are, as in the previous example, completely reactive, but with the advantage of having a small amount of memory available. That makes them more advanced, since that function allows them to learn from the data. That is, every time they are exposed to information they are able to generate learning from that content.

Naturally, those machines create small databases from their interaction history. It is from there that they are able, when necessary, to make small decisions to respond to a request or perform any action. Today, that form of artificial intelligence is widely used, but only at its base. The memory has been expanded to make it work better.

The foundation of limited memory intelligence is still used and can be seen today in facial recognition systems, virtual assistants and chatbots, for example.

Theory of Mind

The Theory of Mind is a type of artificial intelligence that has been worked on a lot in recent years. We cannot say much about its implementation and how far it will go in terms of development, however, the idea is that it will be one of the most innovative models ever seen. The proposal is that she should be able to better understand the interactions to which she is exposed.

Thus, the Theory of Mind deals precisely with the emotions, needs and processes of reflection presented by the human mind.

Currently, that category still looks like a future, even with all the progress made in the segment so far. Experts understand that many advances are still needed in other parts of artificial intelligence studies.

Therefore, the Theory of Mind is an idealization in execution, but it has the potential to be one of the most prominent models. The process, in addition to the development of studies in general, also depends on the understanding of the factors of the human mind that lead to varied feelings and reactions.


Self-awareness is just an idea, that is, a concept that guides the development of artificial intelligence. For now, there are still no concrete creations, but the idea is that, in the future, machines will be self-aware. That’s the highest level of development that artificial intelligence can achieve and, of course, it takes time and a lot of effort.

The idea is that this artificial intelligence can understand all emotions, have its own and understand every detail that happens with those who interact with it. As ambitious as it may seem, it is undeniable that this is the path that scientists have as a horizon. However, it is not possible to say how many years the technology will be able to reach that level.

There is also no doubt that this is a dangerous stage in the advancement of artificial intelligence. Mostly independent machines will have a reasoning that simply can’t be stopped all the time. So much remains to be done, although self-awareness is already a clear idea among types of artificial intelligence.

The current reality of technology allows machines to act like human beings, which is very useful for the most diverse solutions on the market. That’s the way for new types of artificial intelligence to arrive and change the world.
